Devotion: Listen, Laugh, Love

Remember that you began as friends. Your earliest moments as a couple likely included plenty of conversation, laughter, and fun. Your foundation of friendship will sustain you when feelings of romance come and go. Celebrate your history together! Laugh more, encourage constantly, listen intently, and share transparently. Consider this passage:

“When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then they said among the nations, ‘The Lord has done great things for them.’ The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad.”  (Psalm 126:1-3)

As believers in Christ, you have cause to celebrate! You have cause to dream, laugh, shout with joy, and be glad! Why? Because the Lord has done great things. It’s from that place of understanding Christ’s goodness that you realize your true reason for joy–for fun. That underlying reason for your joy will drastically affect the culture of your friendship in marriage.

There are no shortcuts to building a deep friendship. It takes time, honesty, diligence in learning about one another, and celebrating the unending goodness of God in Christ. Make time to build and strengthen your friendship. Have fun and celebrate your life together! Talk and listen!

A rich, healthy friendship will increase the joy and unity in your household for years to come.
