Deep Unity, Two As One, and Thomas Adams

ONE Thought (from us)

If we could share a meal with you, we would talk about one thing: unity. More specifically, we’d talk about unity in Christ. Why? The more deeply a couple agrees about Christ, the more resilient and joy-filled their marriage will be. The trouble is that many couples—even those who call themselves Christians!—fail to truly agree about Jesus. How do we know? Well, isn’t every inclination toward sin and dysfunction a result of us not knowing, believing, and following Christ as we should?

So, you need unity, and you need it in Christ, but how do you get there? Here are three tangible (simple, but not easy) steps to get there:

  1. Articulate your beliefs. We recommend reading traditional creeds and confessions out loud and affirming what they say. If you can’t affirm what they say honestly, then discuss and dig into Scripture.
  2. Read Scripture and pray together, consistently. What’s a better way to walk with Jesus alongside one another than to read the Word and pray?
  3. Find, attend, and get involved in a faithful local church body.

Unity is one of those things we take for granted when we have it but feel baffled when we don’t. Seek Christ, find unity, and may your marriage flourish as you do.

I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
(John 17:20–21)

ONE Quote (from another)

“As God by creation made two of one, so again by marriage He made one of two.”
– Thomas Adams

ONE Question (for you)

What is ONE small conversational habit you can start today that will build your unity as a couple? Think: check-ins, Bible reading/questions, etc.

Note: We talked about this topic in this week’s podcast episode. Be sure to watch or listen to get the full discussion! Also, if you’re looking to grow in unity as a couple, we have a perfect resource for you: Two As One.
